A minimum of 13 people killed and 98 hurt in train crash in the nation of Mexico.

A fatal railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel critical opposition regarding the pace and management of the country's key government projects.

The crash occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a route developed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.

“We shall thoroughly investigate the cause of this tragedy,” stated the country's president.

The official confirmed that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The president added plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those impacted.

Key Undertaking of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the previous administration, whose time in office concluded the prior year. This rail line was closely associated with his government's developmental agenda for the southeastern region.

Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to kickstart the economy of a comparatively poorer part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Worries

The building of both rail lines was managed by the armed forces, marking a significant expansion of its role in national works. They were completed at an accelerated pace, defying predictions to be at least partly launched before the end of that administration.

However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently fueled persistent concerns over construction quality.

  • Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This includes an prior accident this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had several non-fatal derailments.

Calls for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a major opposition party demanded an immediate pause in the development and management of all similar projects.

This pause was requested pending a thorough independent investigation. The party stated that the situation "requires prompt explanations."

In response, the head of state insisted that the train had been running in complete compliance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the construction and operation of these vital projects.
