Everyone is Encouraged to Become the Additional Haim Sister.

"Do you know when you'll be chatting with the Haim sisters?" an inquiry pops up. "My request was to ask if I can become their extra sister."

There is only one problem: I also wants to be the Haims' fourth member. What's more, we are in plentiful company. A host of famous fans have publicly coveted the role.

The evidence suggests something is happening. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana launched their musical journey doing sets at local delicatessens with their family. Today, they are multiple Grammy Award hopefuls.

Like all the best groups, they're a tight-knit trio. Their videos frequently show them striding in harmony down the streets of Los Angeles. During performances, they perform with such pure exuberance you can't help but think, "I'd love to be involved in that, too."

"The amount of times on tour that fans approached us and said, 'After your show, I picked up a guitar'," says Alana, the youngest of the trio. "That is the greatest honour. It is a prize in itself. We have succeeded if we can encourage people to form a group."

"And thus anyone are welcome to be the honorary member of Haim."

Historic Nod

The trio are speaking from their homes, where they're resting up after an major tour in promoting their new album, I Quit.

They're presently reeling from the news it's been nominated for best rock album at the Grammys – with Haim the first female band ever in contention for the prize.

"I follow the announcements every year, so it kind of feels like The Truman Show when your name is read out," says Alana. "I immediately called my sisters to say, 'Did we just hear this correctly or am I dreaming'?"

The significance of the nomination is deeply felt by the sisters.

"We truly set out to make a guitar-driven album this time, so it's a major step," continues Alana. "Yet we're just appreciative for the female artists that came before us."

Heartbreak and Candor

The project emerged from a time of emotional upheaval. All three sisters were single, and the music explores that odd liminal space where you're happy to be free, but not quite ready to move on.

The words follow breakups and partings. The sisters want love, but not the kind of love they've had. You can hear them determining in the moment who they want to be.

"That's a perfect summary, yes," says Danielle. "I Quit is essentially a mantra. You have to make an effort in shutting out the outside opinions and saying, 'I don't give what people think'."

Evolution of Music

That developed toughness demanded a different sonic direction – more organic and direct than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who co-produced the album, that began with the drums.

"The drum sound is such a detailed thing, and I focus so intensely about it," she says.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the subject of our biography," jokes Alana. "I've said it, our albums cannot begin until we find the ideal drum sound."

Stories and Shared Camaraderie

The trio's openness shaped the album's marketing, where the sisters revealed some of their personal misadventures.

A former partner broke up with Este over a medical concern. Alana told a story of travelling to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a high five at midnight.

"During these heartbreaks, you just feel like there's no light," notes Alana. "Thus to be able to share those stories and hear others tell you wilder stories, it's incredible."

An Assured Path

It's not difficult sense a change in the band. These days, Haim are more assured of their standing in the music world.

They're festival headliners, with hit albums and an international following.

However Haim will forever be their primary priority.

"Me and my siblings have been making music since I was four," concludes Alana. "It feels as if no other path that we were meant to do. And I'm really thankful we've gotten here and we're still going strong."
