The Global Health Body Sounds Warning Over Critical Lack of Weight-Loss Medications

Fewer than a tenth of individuals who could benefit from obesity jabs such as Wegovy have access to them, caution the global health agency as it publishes its initial guidance on the therapies.

Considering in excess of 1,000,000,000 individuals worldwide currently obese, it is advocating for increased and just availability to these injectable treatments.

Per projections, in excess of 2,000,000,000 will be obese by 2030 unless action is taken.

"Our latest guidance acknowledges that excess weight is a lifelong illness that can be addressed with holistic and lifelong support," said the agency's head Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

Substantial prices, constrained manufacturing, and supply-chain constraints are significant obstacles to universal access to the injections that can help people shift substantial body mass, says the agency.

Despite the present best projected scenario, the manufacturing of these medications would only suffice for about 100 million people – fewer than 10% of those who need them, per the WHO.

The advice urges governments and firms to increase access, via measures including patent sharing.

A patent on a key compound – the core ingredient of a leading brand – is set to lapse in multiple countries in 2026.

How Weight-Loss Drugs Operate

GLP-1 drugs mimick a natural hormone to reduce digestion speed, suppress the appetite and enhance feelings of fullness so people eat less.

People commonly see weight reduction after several weeks of beginning the regular doses.

Studies points to people may see weight return after a year of halting the drug, as their typical food cravings come back.

Being above a healthy weight increases your risk for contracting health problems, such as diabetes, heart disease, brain attack, and certain malignancies.

Obesity affects people in every country and was linked to over three and a half million deaths worldwide in 2024, according to the WHO.
